THE Port of Los Angeles container throughput in May increased 7.8 per cent year on year to 828,662 TEU, making it the busiest May in the port's 112-year history.
For the first five months of 2019, volumes have increased 5.2 per cent year on year. Previously, the best May was in 2017 with 796,217 TEU.
May imports increased 5.5 per cent to 427,789 TEU. Exports slipped 0.8 per cent to 167,357 TEU. Empties increased 20 per cent to 233,515 TEU.
Said Port of Los Angeles executive director Gene Seroka: "As we prepare for our traditional peak season in the months ahead, we're closely monitoring global trade tensions that have created heightened unpredictability."
The Port of Shanghai's volume in May was up 3.6 per cent year on year to 3.76 million TEU. From January to May, Shanghai posted a 5.2 per cent year-on-year increase in container volume to 17.78 million TEU.
